Lancaster is a city located in Los Angeles County, California in the United States of America. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 118,718. As of 2004, the Lancaster Municipal government estimates the population at 129,019.

Founded in 1876 along the route of the Southern Pacific Railroad (now merged into the Union Pacific Railroad), Lancaster was originally a commercial and social center primarily for Antelope Valley farmers. After World War II its population saw a noticeable increase thanks to its proximity to Edwards Air Force Base (formerly known as Muroc Army Air Field) and Plant 42.

There are 41,745 housing units at an average density of 171.5/km² (444.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 62.82% White, 16.01% African American, 1.02% Native American, 3.81% Asian, 0.23% Pacific Islander, 11.11% from other races, and 5.00% from two or more races. 24.13% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 38,224 households out of which 42.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.4% are married couples living together, 17.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.6% are non-families. 22.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
