Redcar and Cleveland is a unitary authority in the former county of Cleveland, consisting of Redcar, Saltburn-by-the-Sea, Guisborough, and small towns such as Brotton, Skelton, and Loftus. The area was historically part of Yorkshire, and is now part of the ceremomial county of North Yorkshire. It had a resident population of 139,132 in 2001. It is represented in Parliament by the barrister Vera Baird (Labour) for the Redcar constituency and by Ashok Kumar (Labour) for the Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland constituency.

The district was created in 1974 as Langbaurgh, after the ancient wapentake of Yorkshire. It was renamed as Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council when it became a unitary authority on April 1, 1996.
