Leopold Vietoris

Dr. Leopold Vietoris (June 4, 1891 - April 9, 2002) was an Austrian mathematician who gained added fame by reaching an extremely old age.

He was known for his contributions to topology and other fields of mathematics, his interest in mathematical history and for being a keen alpinist. He attended the University of Innsbruck where he earned his Ph.D.

Vietoris lends his name to a few mathematical concepts:

Leopold Vietoris lived to 110 years and 309 days old and became the oldest known living Austrian man. In so doing he became a rare example of a supercentenarian already known for some other achievement.
