List of historical monkeys

This is a list of historical monkeys (that is, individual monkeys of historical significance).

  • Able (a Rhesus Macaque) and Baker (a squirrel monkey), the first animals sent into space by the US to survive the experience. They were launched in May 1959 as a test of NASA's launch facilities at Cape Canaveral and procedures for retrieving astronauts after splashdown. Able died a few months after the mission, but Baker lived another 25 years.
  • Katie (a White-headed Capuchin) - performing monkey, played Marcel in Friends and Anaheim Angels' mascot "Rally Monkey".
  • An unidentified monkey was hanged in Hartlepool during the Napoleonic wars after it had washed ashore from a shipwrecked French warship. It is unclear if the people of Hartlepool knew that it was monkey or were merely confused as to what Frenchmen looked like. The story of this incident became notorious in the region such that Hartlepool is now identified by it: the motto of Hartlepool Football Club is H'Angus the Monkey, and in 2002 Stuart Drummond who played him was elected as the town's Mayor.
