Lugo


Lugo is a city in northwestern Galiza, the capital of the province of Lugo in the autonomous community of Galicia in Spain.

The municipality had a population of 89,509 in 2002.

The city was founded some time around 70 B.C.

Situation and features

Located on a Celtic site above the Rio Minho and named for the Celtic god Lugus, it is the only city in Spain to be surrounded by completely intact Roman walls, which reach a height of 10 to 15 metres along a 3-km circuit ringed with 85 towers.

Besides the walls, sights include the cathedral and the Museo Provincial, which shows a display of Galego art.
