The Battle of Maida took place on July 6 1806, between the British expeditionary force in Calabria, 5,100 strong under Sir John Stuart , and the French 6,440 strong force under General Raynier . The British fired volleys then charged with the bayonet, and the French, though veterans, failing to withstand the onslaught, broke and fled, losing heavily in the pursuit.
