Manipur University

Manipur University came into existence on June 5,1980. It is constituted under the Manipur University Act,1980(Manipur Act NoVIII of 1980). The university campus is located in Canchipur and is in the vicinity of the ruins of the old palace of Manipur. The Manipur University came into existence on June 5, 1980. The University has its administrative headquarters and Post-Graduate classes and research in the premises of the former Jawaharlal Nehru University Post-Graduate Centre. The centre was merged with the University on 1st April,1981.

In the News

The University was recently in the news after the Vice Chancellor N. Bijoy Singh and Registrar R.K. Ranjan were abducted at gunpoint Monday by militants of the outlawed Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL) from the outskirts of Imphal. They were shot in the legs before being released on Saturday.

According to a KYKL leader, "The two were punished as part of our special operation to cleanse the education system of corruption."
