Members of the Scottish Parliament, 2003-2007

The Scottish Parliament is composed of 129 members (referred to as MSPs, short for "Members of the Scottish Parliament"). Seventy-three are elected from first past the post constituencies. Fifty-six are elected through the Additional Member System (AMS), a form of proportional representation.

The regions used for AMS are Highlands and Islands; North East Scotland; Mid Scotland and Fife; West of Scotland; Glasgow; Central Scotland; South of Scotland; and Lothians. These regions were the same as were used for elections to the European Parliament before 1999.

Each region elects 7 PR MSPs.

The current party distribution in the Scottish Parliament:

The Scottish Parliamentary Election, 2003 produced a slightly different make up for the Parliament than had been in place for the previous four years, with the number of Labour and SNP MSPs being reduced and the number of those representing minor parties outwith the established four main parties increasing.
