Murein

Murein is a biochemical which is a large constituent of cell walls in prokaryotes. It serves to make the cell wall rigid due to it's structure - it is a polysaccharide, which line up in chains linked by amino acids. This rigidity is necessary to prevent the cell from bursting by water upon osmosis. It contains nitrogen and is structurally similar to chitin.
