National Socialist Party

There have been a number of groups calling themselves the National Socialist Party or similar names. Most of them are Nazi or Neo-Nazi parties such as:

• Germany - National Socialist German Workers' Party
• Iran - Iranian National Socialist Party
• Netherlands - National Socialist Movement
• Russia - Russian National Socialist Party
• Austria-Hungary - German National Socialist Workers Party

Prior to the rise of Adolf Hitler, however, when the name carried none of its present connotations, several centrist or left wing parties also used the term "National Socialist":

• France - Parti Socialiste National founded by Pierre Biétry in 1903 . It became the "Fédération Nationale des Jaunes de France" (or the "Yellow socialists") in 1904.
• Czech lands - Czech National Socialist Party (founded 1898)
• United Kingdom - National Socialist Party (UK) (1916 to 1919)

The name is commonly avoided these days by all except for neo-Nazi groups, due to the association of the phrase "National Socialism" with Nazism. This association is not automatically made outside of the west. In North-Eastern India, for instance, there are at least three groups using similar names, two factions of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (which is a separatist group advocating independence of Nagaland from India) and the National Socialist Party of Tripura.
