Nitro compound

'Nitro compounds are organic compounds that contain one or more nitro functional groups ('). They are often highly explosive and volatile; various impurities or improper handling can easily trigger a violent exothermic decomposition. Inorganic salts containing the nitro group are called nitrates.

Nitro compounds are usually produced by adding a nitrite to sulphuric acid. This is almost the same as making a nitrate but with a nitrite instead of nitrate radical. As with nitration nitritation can be very dangerous due to the generly explosive nature f the substance.
