Pebble Mill Studios

(Redirected from Pebble Mill)

Pebble Mill Studios are located in the leafy suburbs of Birmingham, England. Opened by HRH Princess Anne on the 10th November 1971, Pebble Mill has remained a landmark ever since. The land for Pebble Mill was acquired by BBC Birmingham in the 1950s but plans for the site weren't approved until 1967, the same year that construction of the studios began.

The 7 storey site contained several offices, television studios, radio studios, 2 canteens, a post office and splendid gardens. The views from the roof are beautiful as the studios overlook not only Cannon Hill Park, a nature centre, but also Birmingham's city centre. The worlds longest running radio soap The Archers, television drama Doctors and Midlands Today were all produced at Pebble Mill.

Throughout 2004 the BBC has been in the process of vacating the premises and moving to new studios at The Mailbox. This transfer is now almost complete. Remaining fixtures, furniture and technical equipment were auctioned at Pebble Mill on 11th November 2004. The future use of the site remains unclear, although the studios are likely to be demolished as were the BBC's Lime Grove Studios in London when they were closed in 1991.
