Pennyroyal Tea

Pennyroyal Tea is a song by the 1990s grunge band Nirvana. Pennyroyal tea is an abortifacient. It was scheduled to be released as a single in April 1994, but the release of the single was abandoned after Kurt Cobain's suicide.

The song was originally written in 1990, but not included on the Nevermind album in 1992. Much dispute exsists over if Courtney Love actually wrote the lyrics, as she has claimed in interviews and played the song multiple times, including her band Hole's MTV Unplugged performance. It was recorded in 1993 by Steve Albini for inclusion on the In Utero album. A remix by Scott Litt appears on an alternate, censored, version of the album, and was planned for the single release. This mix is also available on the Nirvana best-of album.

Pennyroyal Tea singles were produced, and in some countries appear to have been sold before being withdrawn and destroyed. Genuine copies can sell for hundreds of dollars. The tracklisting for the single is as follows

  1. Pennyroyal Tea (Scott Litt remix)
  2. I Hate Myself And Want To Die
  3. Where Did You Sleep Last Night (Leadbelly)
