There are several uses of the term Protea:

• In biology, Protea is a genus of flowers in the family Proteaceae.
• In telecommunications, Protea is the designation of a previous South African telephone plug design.
• In sports, Protea is the official designation (by government decree) for a member of a sports team representing the Republic of South Africa, most commonly the South African cricket team. (Note that the previous designation of Springbok may still be used as a nickname, for instance by the South African rugby team .)
