Rajah Suliman (also spelled Raja Sulayman) was the ruler of Manila when Spanish conquistador Miguel Lopez de Legaspi arrived in the Philippines in 1564. He first conquered the Visayan islands of Cebu, Bohol, and Panay before he sent his captain, Martin de Goiti, and his grandson, Juan de Salcedo, to Manila in 1569. There Goiti defeated Sulayman in the Battle of Bangkusay, a district in Tondo. Sulayman was said to have fled to Mindanao after the battle and was never heard of again.
