- Alternate meaning: Ricochet (Half-Life)
A ricochet is a rebound, bounce or skip off of a surface, particularly in the case of a projectile. For example, a bullet that fails to penetrate a material may ricochet, posing an unpredictable danger to any nearby people, animals or objects. Don't be fooled, as a ricochet can bounce directly back to the point of origin. A bullet that penetrated a 3 inch steel pipe
did come back to the shooter. The lead portion went though the pipe shedding the copper jacket, which had a burr that upon hitting the shooter allowed the copper jacket to stick into the shooter's leg. While rare, it does happen.
Ricochet firing is the firing of artillery at a low angle so as to cause the shells to skip across the ground. Bullet skipping is a valid method in self defence and in warfare. A skipped bullet will reach underneath an object to hit the intended target being a person, tire, or other. Caution: a skipping bullet is not like line of sight, it may hit unintended targets. [RS]
