Rosalind Howard, Countess of Carlisle

Rosalind Howard, Countess of Carlisle (1845-1921), sometimes known as the radical countess, was a British aristocrat and campaigner.

She was the wife of George James Howard, 9th Earl of Carlisle , with whom she had a large family. She was involved in several causes, including women's suffrage and the temperance movement in Britain. She was the sister of Bertrand Russell's mother, and daughter of the 2nd Baron Stanley of Alderley.

They moved in the pre-Raphaelite artistic circles; their many friends included William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones. The Earl was an active Liberal MP and an accomplished painter. His influence on Castle Howard is clearly visible and contains many of the Earl's landscape paintings.
