Seventh-generation era

The seventh-generation era is a video game era that is going to begin in late 2005 and is set to take off in mid-to-late 2006. Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft, the three current major console manufacturers, have plans to release new consoles in this era. This era will also see a new portable console by Nintendo, the Nintendo DS, and a portable console by Sony, the Sony PSP. Backward compatibility seems to be an early theme of this era.

The following systems have been announced and will be shown in some form at 2005's Electronic Entertainment Expo (E³).

• Nintendo Project Revolution (code name) (To Be Released: Japan, U.S., Europe)
• Sony PlayStation 3 (To Be Released: Japan, U.S., Europe)
• Untitled Xbox successor (referred to by media as Xbox 2, Project Xenon, and Xbox Next)(To Be Released: Japan, late 2005/early 2006 U.S., Europe)
• Untitled N-Gage successor
