Shell mound

A shell mound is a pile of refuse left by earlier, often prehistoric, inhabitants of a place. In addition to mollusk shells, they frequently include bones of humans and animals, vessels of clay or stone, and other artifacts that give information about the people who made the mound. The archaeological study of shell mounds began in Denmark in the latter half of the 19th century.
