Shorinjiryu Kenkokan Karate was founded by Shinan Kori Hisataka (1907-1988) shortly after World War II in Japan.
Shinan Hisataka combined various aspects of his studies of Okinawan Karate (principally with Chotoku Kyan), Judo, Aikijujutsu, Chinese Martial Arts and various Okinawan and Japanese weapons arts.
Following Kori Hisataka's retirement in approximately 1974, his son Hanshi Masayuki Hisataka (now 9th Dan) took over as head of Shorinjiryu Kenkokan. At around that time, various senior practitioners chose to leave the Kenkokan organisation to establish their own lineages. Apart from the Kenkokan organisation, various other schools follow the teachings of Shorinjiryu Kenkokan as founded by Shinan Kori Hisataka. These include:
- Shorinjiryu Kenyukai Karate Watanabe-Ha
- Shorinjiryu Kenryukan Karate
- Shorinjiryu Shindo Budo Kwai
- Australian Shorinjiryu Karatedo
- Shorinjiryu Genbukan Karate
In the 1980s Kyoshi Myron Lubitsch founded the Shorinjiryu Shinzen Kyokai, an umbrella organisation of the various Shorinjiryu groups descended from the lineage of Shinan Kori Hisataka, apart from the Kenkokan group.
