Shoshin Nagamine

'Shoshin Nagamine was born on July 15, 1907, in Tomari, Naha City, Okinawa. He was very sick as a child and, in his sophomore year, contracted a gastroenteric disorder and it was feared he would contract tuberculosis. he began a self-imposed diet and took up karate under the instruction of Chojin Kuba. At the age of nineteen, he entered a school in Shuri under the direction of Taro Shimabuku. On his recommendation, Nagamine began studying under Ankichi Arakaki with his current teacher. It was around this time that he gained the name Chaippaii Matsu, meaning "tenacious pine tree," having now become the picture of health.
