The genus Spheniscus ("wedge-shaped") contains four species of penguins collectively known as "the banded penguins", due to their similar coloration.

The four species of banded penguins are the African Penguin (Spheniscus demersus), Galapagos Penguin (Spheniscus mendiculus), Humboldt Penguin (Spheniscus humboldti), and Magellanic Penguin (Spheniscus magellanicus).
