St. Tammany Parish is a parish located in the state of Louisiana. The parish seat is Covington and as of 2000, the population is 191,268.
The parish has a total area of 2,911 km2 (1,124 mi2). 2,212 km2 (854 mi2) of it is land and 699 km2 (270 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 24.01% water.
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 191,268 people, 69,253 households, and 52,701 families residing in the parish. The population density is 86/km2 (224/mi2). There are 75,398 housing units at an average density of 34/km2 (88/mi2). The racial makeup of the parish is 87.03% White, 9.90% Black or African American, 0.43% Native American, 0.74% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.61% from other races, and 1.26% from two or more races. 2.48% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 69,253 households out of which 39.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.40% are married couples living together, 11.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.90% are non-families. 19.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.73 and the average family size is 3.15.
In the parish the population is spread out with 28.40% under the age of 18, 7.30% from 18 to 24, 29.90% from 25 to 44, 24.30% from 45 to 64, and 10.00% who are 65 years of age or older.
