Tavisupleba

"Tavisupleba" (in Georgian თავისუფლება) is the new national anthem of Georgia. The title means "Freedom".

History

The new Georgian anthem was adopted on 23 April 2004, exactly 5 months after the resignation of President Eduard Shevardnadze (former Soviet Foreign Minister).

"Tavisupleba" succeeds the old anthem Dideba zetsit kurtheuls, adopted after Georgia's independence from the Soviet Union.

Lyrics

Lyrics (in Georgian):

Transliteration

The following is a reasonably accurate, though unscientific, transliteration. It does not fully account for the complex Georgian consonants.

Chemi khatia samshoblo,
Sakhate mteli kveqana,
Ganatebuli mta-bari
Tsilnaqaria Ghmerttana.
Tavisupleba dghes chveni
Momavals umghers didebas,
Tsiskris varskvlavi amodis
Da or zghvas shua brtsqindeba.
Dideba tavisuplebas,
Tavisuplebas dideba!

English translation

(English translation is done by David Chikvaidze)

My icon is my motherland,
And the whole world is its icon-stand.
Bright mounts and valleys
Are shared with God
Today our freedom
Sings to the glory of future,
The dawn star rises up
And shines out between two seas.
Praise be to liberty,
Praise be to liberty!
