Dawei

Dawei (formerly known as Tavoy), southeastern Myanmar, capital of Tanintharyi Division, is a port at the head of the Dawei River estuary, 30 m. from the Andaman Sea. The district has an area of 5308 sq. m. It lies between Thailand and the Bay of Bengal, enclosed by mountains on three sides. The climate is on the whole pleasant. The annual rainfall averages 228 inches. The town is in an area in which rice and timber are produced; iron, tin, and tungsten mines are in the vicinity. Once capital of an independent kingdom, it has been at times subject to both Myanmar and Thailand and came under British rule in 1824. Population (2004 estimate) 139 900. It is situated at 14.09°N 98.20°E.
