The Darkling beetle is a family of beetles found worldwide. Estimates vary between 12,000 and about 15,000 species. The adult form is black with hardened front wings. Darkling beetles eat both new and decaying plant growth. Major predators include birds, rodents, and lizards. The larval stage is more commonly referred to as mealworms.
