Its mascot is the horned frog. Its school colors are purple and white. About 8,000 students attend the school. The institution is affiliated with the religious denomination known as the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).
HistoryFounded by brothers Addison and Randolph Clark after returning from service in the Civil War, it was originally called AddRan Male and Female Academy when the school was chartered in 1873. It's first class included thirteen enrolled students. The establishment of a coed school was a remarkably progressive step for that time, when most schools were for either men or for women separately. The school was orignally established in Thorpe Springs , Texas but financial difficulties resulted in a move to Waco from 1895 to 1910, and then relocated to its permanent home in Fort Worth in 1911, where it still thrives today. The institution was renamed Texas Christian University in 1902; however, to honor the founding brothers, one of its schools was named the AddRan College of Arts and Sciences.
SportsTCU competes in NCAA sports as a member of Division I (I-A in football). TCU won the National Championship in football in both 1935 and 1938. TCU was a member of the old Southwest Conference (which also included Texas A&M University, University of Texas, Texas Tech and others) until that conference was disbanded after the 1995 season. It is currently a member of Conference USA, but will leave that conference in 2005 and join the Mountain West Conference. The school's most famous athletes were football players Sammy Baugh and Davey O'Brien for whom the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award is named; among currently-active athletes, the best-known TCU product is another NFL star, LaDainian Tomlinson, who is the starting running back for the San Diego Chargers and in 2004 signed a 6 year, $60 million contract making him the highest paid running back in NFL history.
