1943 novel by Raymond Chandler featuring, as do all of his major works, the Los Angeles private investigator Philip Marlowe.
Notable primarily for its removal of Marlowe from his usual setting of Los Angeles, the novel deals with the case of a missing woman from a town in the mountains outside the city. It is also one of the few Chandler works to make explicit reference to WWII despite most of his novels having been published during that conflict.
