The Marvelettes

The Marvelettes was an American singing girl group on the Motown label, most famous for recording the label's first US #1 pop hit, "Please Mr. Postman ".

Other hits included "Don't Mess With Bill" and "Too Many Fish in the Sea", which they turned down "Where Did Our Love Go" to record.

The group consisted of Gladys Horton , Georgia Dobbins , Katherine Anderson , Georgeanna Tillman , and Juanita Cowart . Both Horton and Dobbins took turns singing lead. Dobbins dropped out of the group due to family reasons before their biggest hit was released and was replaced by Wanda Young . Cowart left due to an alleged nervous breakdown in 1962, and the group remained a quartet. In 1965, Tillman left due to health problems, reducing the group to a trio. Horton retired to marry in 1967 and was replaced by Anne Bogan . Finally, in 1969, they disbanded.

Tillman died on January 6, 1980 of sickle cell anemia (age 36).
