The Pianist (memoir)

The Pianist is a memoir written by the Polish musician of Jewish origins Władysław Szpilman. He tells how he survived the German deportations of Jews to extermination camps, the 1943 destruction of the Warsaw ghetto, and the 1944 Warsaw Uprising during World War II.

A 2002 film version was adapted by Ronald Harwood and stars Adrien Brody, Emilia Fox and Michał Żebrowski . The story was filmed by Roman Polański in 2001. Polański was awarded the Palme d'Or (Golden Palm) award of the Cannes film festival on May 26, 2002. The film eventually premiered in Warsaw on September 5, 2002. The Pianist was nominated for several Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Brody won the Oscar for Best Actor and Polański the one for Best Director. It has also received a Cesar for best picture in 2003.
