Tono-Bungay

Tono-Bungay is arguably H.G. Wells' best novel and certainly his most under-rated. It describes the rise of a patent medicine business empire, and is wonderfully evocative of the Edwardian period. This story should form the basis of a superb film or TV classic serial. The characters come to life in the pages, particularly the colourful "Uncle Ponderevo" who devised Tono Bungay, the tonic that forms the title of the book.
