United States Department of Agriculture Foreign Agricultural Service

The Foreign Agricultural Service of the United States Department of Agriculture is a information provider, targeted at American businesses which want to import or export agricultural products. It provides statistics on production and distribution of foods around the world. The agency takes a partisan view of such issues as genetic engineering and truth in labeling .

Though it is not widely known, the USDA FAS also provides a wealth of services other than simply distributing packets about nutrition. The FAS is also responsible for the United food donation machine- from contract awarding to distribution, the FAS ensures that foreign countries receive food donations in time of need, whether that be during famine or war. More commonly heralded, USAID is an administrator of one type of USDA FAS program, Title II. The other programs are Food for Peace , Food for Progress , and 416(b) .
