University of San Carlos

The University of San Carlos (USC) in Cebu City is the oldest school in the Philippines and in Asia. Founded by the Spanish Jesuits on August 1, 1595, it was formerly known as the Colegio de San Ildefonso. This makes the school older than the University of Santo Tomas (1611) in Manila and Harvard University (1636) in the United States. The University was granted its university charter in1948. It was closed from 1769 at the expulsion of the Jesuits until 1783 when it reopened under a new name.
