Urgench (also Urganch) is a city in Uzbekistan with 145,700 inhabitants (1999). It is located on right bank of the Amudarja river in the Province of Xorazm.
The history of the city goes back to the second half of the 18th century. The city should not be with the city of Konya-Urgench (also known as "Old Urgench") in Turkmenistan. The city of "Old Urgench" was relocated to Urgench after the old city came under prolonged and constant attack by the Mongols. Many of the historic buildings, and most of the city plan, is based directly on the old city.
