Varsity Match

The Varsity Match usually refers to the annual rugby union fixture played between Oxford and Cambridge Universities.

This event began in 1872 (although on a few years it has not been held), and since 1921 has been played at Twickenham. Following the 123rd match in December 2004 (which resulted in a win for Oxford), Oxford have won 52 games, but Cambridge retain the lead with 57. Only 14 games have ended in draws. It is always played on the first Tuesday in December by tradition.

A voluntary collection taken at the 2004 Varsity Match went to the Oku Katsuhiko Memorial Fund for children in Iraq.

Varsity Matches between Oxford and Cambridge are also arranged in various other sports, in some cases at the original inception of the sport, e.g. association football (soccer). The first recorded water polo match in history was contested by Cambridge and Oxford in 1891.
