Causes

The causes of this hypersensitivity are obscure, but dry atmosphere, as well as several medicaments, alcohols, emotional shocks, air pollutants, weather changes or still spicy food, are stimuli.

Many patients can be subject to vasomotor rhinitis and allergic rhinitis simultaneously.

Symptoms

Recurring nasal inflammation, swelling of the nasal membrane or profuse watery nasal discharge might signal vasomotor rhinitis.

Treatment

Measures to treat or prevent vasomotor rhinitis include: avoiding dry air (by keeping air humid, using vaporizers). Decongestants are not a useful treatment.
