Viborg, Denmark

Viborg is a town located in Jutland, Denmark.

As of January 1st, 2005, the town had an estimated population of 43,845 and a density of 138 persons per km². The total area is 312.54 km².

Viborg lies in the heart of Jutland and is renowned for its cathedral, the construction of which started in 1130, but has been burned to the ground more than once. Of the original church, only the tomb has been preserved.

In medieval times, Viborg was a very important city because of its centric position in Jutland. At one time, Viborg is said to have had about twenty monasteries. The very first time a king was anointed; King Hardeknud, it happened in Viborg.

From 2007, when Denmark will be split into five regions, Viborg will be the capital of one of the regions, which will incorporate the much larger (second largest in the country) city Århus.
