Vilmos Zsigmond

Vilmos Zsigmond (Hungary, Szeged, June 16, 1930), cinematographer.

Vilmos Zsigmond was born in Hungary and studied cinema in Budapest. Together with his friend and fellow student László Kovács, he filmed the events of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution in Budapest and then smuggled the film out of the country shortly afterwards.

They settled in Los Angeles and worked in photo labs as a technician and photographer. During the 60s he worked on many low-budget independent films as he attempted to break into the film industry.

He gained prominence during the 70's working on Altman's McCabe and Mrs. Miller and Close Encounters of the Third Kind for which he won an Academy award in 1977.
