Vinnytsia, or Vinnytsya (Ukrainian Вінниця) is a city in central Ukraine, located on the banks of Pivdennyi Buh River in 270 km far from the capital Kyiv. Administratively, Vinnytsia is a capital of Vinnyts'ka oblast', historically, a part of the Podillya region.
Its population (As of 2004) is 332,400.
There are notable machinery and confectionery industries in the city.
Since post-WWII time, it is also a home to major Air Force base, including an airfield, arsenals, a hospital and other installations. Since 1992, the Ukrainian Air Force Command is based on Vinnytsia.
History
Vinnytsia was an important trade and political center notable as early as 16th century. It played a significant role through Cossack wars and World War II.
