Visual SourceSafe

Visual SourceSafe is the name of revision control software produced by Microsoft. It lets users store multiple versions of files and is particularly geared towards managing versions of source code by software developers.

It is part of Microsoft Visual Studio and is available only on Windows platforms; however, a client for Metrowerks CodeWarrior on the Macintosh existed at one time and allowed the use of VSS in Macintosh development projects.

Due to sluggish updating, system instability, and missing features taken for granted on newer revision control systems, Visual SourceSafe is widely reviled by professional software developers. Microsoft is in the process of replacing it with a newer package called Team System, but this product is targeted at a higher-end market and is not considered particularly suitable for individual developers.
