WBRC-TV

WBRC TV, channel 6, FOX6 is the Fox Broadcasting Company affiliate in Birmingham. Its transmitter is located atop Red Mountain in Birmingham. WBRC began operation on July 4, 1949 on channel 4 as an NBC affiliate, but moved to channel 6 in 1953 and became a CBS affiliate in 1954. WBRC then became an ABC affiliate in 1967. The station's call letters stand for W Bell Radio Company.

In early 1996, News Corporation(Newscorp), owners of Fox, purchased New World Communications and all its stations, including WBRC. The reasoning behind the purchase was because Fox wanted to affiliate with stations that had high-rated news operations, like WBRC. This affiliation switch led to the "Big Switch" of '96, in which WTTO lost its Fox affiliation, and the ABC affiliation in Birmingham moved to the station combo of WBMA/WCFT/WJSU.

Since the affiliation switch, the station has been known as "FOX6". It has gained the reputation of having one of the nation's highest-rated primetime newscasts: "FOX6 News at 9:00". It also airs the most hours of news programming per week in the market (43 hours).
