The Waimakariri District of New Zealand is located on South Island, on the eastern coast. It is north of Christchurch and the eponymous Waimakariri River. The name is Maori for a cold river.
The district was established in 1989 and consists of approximately 2,255 square kilometres. Its 2001 population was 36,900. The primary towns are Kaiapoi and Rangiora, as well as Woodend and Oxford.
