White bicycles (witte fietsen in Dutch) refers to the practice of providing bicycles (traditionally painted white) for free public use in some regions of the Netherlands. If you want to go somewhere, just find a white bike, ride it to your destination, and leave it for someone else to find and use.
The project started in the 1960s by Luud Schimmelpenninck and is active in some parts of Holland and in some other places like Helsinki and Copenhagen. It originally existed as one in a series of White Plans proposed in the street magazine PROVO. In 2004 a project was started in the United States.
