Wirral is a metropolitan borough in Merseyside, North West England, which occupies part of the Wirral peninsular more commonly known locally as The Wirral.
Wirral Metropolitan Borough has a population of about 312,000 in an area of 60 square miles (155 km²). It faces Liverpool over the River Mersey to the east, the Irish Sea to the north and the River Dee to the west. The main towns in the borough are Birkenhead and Wallasey
Wirral Metropolitan Borough forms the most north-westerly part of the traditional county of Cheshire, and was once a hundred.
