Wright, Wyoming

Wright is a town located in Campbell County, Wyoming. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,347.

History

Settlement began in the area near Wright in the 1970s, with the creation of the Black Thunder Coal Mine, the largest mine in the Powder River Basin. The town itself was incorporated in 1985.

Geography

Wright is located at 43°45'18" North, 105°29'26" West (43.754988, -105.490691).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 7.1 km² (2.8 mi²). 7.1 km² (2.8 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,347 people, 475 households, and 388 families residing in the town. The population density is 189.1/km² (490.0/mi²). There are 544 housing units at an average density of 76.4/km² (197.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.62% White, 0.00% African American, 0.45% Native American, 0.07% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.82% from other races, and 1.04% from two or more races. 2.30% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 475 households out of which 48.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.6% are married couples living together, 7.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 18.3% are non-families. 15.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 1.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.84 and the average family size is 3.15.

In the town the population is spread out with 33.9% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 34.7% from 25 to 44, 23.3% from 45 to 64, and 1.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 112.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 107.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $53,125, and the median income for a family is $55,764. Males have a median income of $46,058 versus $22,955 for females. The per capita income for the town is $20,126. 6.1% of the population and 3.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.8% of those under the age of 18 and 33.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
